California 2010

We had the BEST time on our California road trip! We left early (about 2 am) on Sat and got to our first stopping point (Elk Grove by Sacramento) at about 4. The girls did such an amazing job in the car both ways!!! We visited with family, went to Disneyland, and even snuck in a short stay in SanDiego so that we could go to SeaWorld. What a FABULOUS summer memory!

Malia was so excited to see the castle...she recognizes it from her Disney movies:-)

Playing in the water at the beach. Something about sand that makes you feel like a kid again!

Trying to break out!
Malia LOVED this jungle cruise.
Malia was chosen from the crowd to dance in the parade at Disneyland! Such a great time!
The Blue Horizon show at SeaWorld. I was in awe...especially because I LOVE dolphins!

Finding Nemo...I am not going to lie...the submarine had me a little claustrophobic!
Malia was so fascinated by the princesses...she kept staring and waving. Too cute.
Driving with Daddy!
Ava was not happy that I was paying attention to anything but her.
We had a wonderful dinner with Aaron's father and his two sisters. It was such a wonderful experience to meet with them.

This is Aaron's grandfather, Daddy Alfred. He had quite a bit to do with Aaron being the amazing father/husband he is today. We love him dearly.

Ballerina Girl!!!

As long as we can remember, Malia has wanted to be a ballerina. She has begged me to teach her but I have NO idea of ballet! So she finally got her chance to be a ballerina at the Fancy Nancy Ballet Camp. She LOVED it...I have a feeling this will continue on for years to come...

Ah.....Summer Vacation(s)!

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! Both girls really enjoyed the fireworks this year. It was such a joy to share their excitement with them. :-)

Here is the golf course (Myrtle Creek) that we went to. 10 of us golfed...5 ladies and 5 guys. It was such a beautiful course!
What a great time we had!!!!
Here's the ladies!!!!! My mom and I shared a cart and a lot of laughs. Poor Auntie Jewel may be scared for life after Rachel almost hit her with a ball!!!
Here is the basis of Aaron and my nights...chillin with our girls and taking turns gambling. His turn was WAY better...I lost 20 dollars and he won 1100...
Summer allows us time with our favorite godkids...Andre and Jazz are our joy!! We had a great time at Chuck E Cheese.
This is Ava driving over Andre' with the train. They both thought it was hilarious!
Here we are at our annual Lake Chelan. This year, Ava was big enough to get into the water...and that girl LOVES TO SWIM!!!
Here is the crew getting ready to putt putt...noone told us it was 18 holes and real grass. We got a chance to practice putting to help our golf game!

Malia was ecstatic to have time with her cousins, Claudia and Makenzie. They are so good with her!!!!

Fathers Day!

One of the most exciting things happened this Father's Day. The Tacoma News Tribune did an article on my father...I can't even explain how amazing it was to watch his reaction as he read the article. I have copied it below:
Things my dad taught me Tacoma teacher Megan Qualls says the best lesson learned from her father is that children always come first
Megan Qualls has many warm things to say about her father, Michael Cook: He’s supportive, generous, unconditionally loving. But what the 32-year-old Tacoma teacher has learned most – and is still learning – from her dad is to always put your children first.

“My father told me for as long as I can remember that to have children means to lose the right to be selfish,” wrote Qualls in her submission for the newspaper’s Fathers’ Day call to readers. “To have children means that they always come first.”

That generosity gave Qualls both a happy childhood and a settled adult life, her family surrounded by her father’s unselfish love.

Qualls grew up in Tacoma with her brother Chad, now 35. Her parents divorced when she was young, but they were both “very present. We had lots of little routines. Every single Wednesday, Dad would take us to the movies – I later found out that he would go without dinner to afford that. Then we’d stay with him every weekend. He’d take us to Grandma’s, and because of that, our cousins became as close as siblings. He was always there.”

He’s still putting kids first, says Qualls, visiting her and her brother’s families every Saturday, going golfing with Qualls and other family members every Sunday, and being there for his grandchildren.

Qualls also was inspired by how her father, who now assesses claims for Washington state risk management, overcame a difficult childhood to succeed in life.

“He is an inspiration to all. … He encouraged us to be whatever we wanted,” wrote Qualls. “He led by example, being the first in his family to go to college. For that reason, I am a teacher.”

Cook also is the kind of father who doesn’t hesitate to admit his mistakes and help his kids learn from their own – encouraging Qualls to study full-time rather than work, sharing why his marriage hadn’t worked. Even Qualls’ friends would come to him for advice.

Thanks to her dad, Qualls says, she has a happy marriage, an example for her own parenting, and a job she loves giving her dad’s inspiration to kids she teaches.

“I talk about my dad to my students, how they shouldn’t be embarrassed about lack of money, and how you can still make good choices,” she explains. “I stress what he taught me: to value people on character, not on what they own. My dad made me and my brother feel like we were the only thing he needed – having that support makes you feel like you can do anything. I want that for all kids.”

Cook echoes this. “It’s kind of corny, but [the most rewarding part of parenthood for me was] my children … watching them and helping them get to where they need to get to. They are so special.”

And Cook’s main piece of advice for fathers?

“Be interested in your kids – who they are and what they do at every stage. Sometimes you want to direct them, but you’ve got to let them go where they want to go. Even if you make mistakes, if you do it with love, you’ll be OK.”

As Qualls wrote: “(My dad) lives by example and does everything in his power to ensure that my brother and I are happy and secure in the knowledge that we are loved unconditionally. Now we both have our own children and I often wonder, am I putting my children first? Am I being the type of parent that Mike Cook is? I sure hope so.”

Let Summer Begin!!!

I always am so sad to say goodbye to my students...it truly is the only thing I dislike about my job. HOWEVER...who can see a down side to having time with my beautiful girls and hubbie? We have some exciting things planned this summer...golf in Oregon, Lake Chelan with the fam, a wedding at Suncadia...a ROAD TRIP to Disneyland!!!! Malia is also signed up for Art class, ballet, and we have our Wednesday playdates with the other teachers. So many exciting things happening...what a wonderful life!

We decided to kick off summer by bringing out the bouncer...it is so amazing to me how much changes in a year. Last year, Ava was so small and now she is bouncing away with her sister!!

We ended the jumping session with our "schmooshed" face pics...the girls were so funny!!!!!!
